The other day I met Ruby Shrestha. This is what Ruby told me. This is her story – not mine.
Ruby’s father was a social worker, and many people came to their home. Ruby’s elder brother got interested in local politics. In 2051 the Army started to come to their home.
In 2058, Ruby's younger brother got arrested, and after three days he got transferred to the Surya Vinayak Army barracks situated outside Bhaktapur. The Army wanted her elder brother, but he had left the home. Instead the Army told her younger brother.
The next day the Army published that they had arrested Ruby’s elder brother. But it was not true. They had taken her younger brother. Some women activists also got arrested the same day. They later told Ruby that they saw her younger brother hanging up side down in the Army barracks. He got wiped the hole day. One of the guards at the Army camp told Ruby’s mother that her younger son was taken by the Army. She went to the Army barracks to see him. He was only 13 years old, but looked like he was 20.
Ruby’s mother and two other women went to the Army barracks, but was not allowed in. From a distance Ruby’s mother saw her son being dragged around covered in blood. The Army barracks where situated in the forests, and Ruby’s mother was threated by the Army people. It was not uncommon that women were raped and killed around the barracks in the forest. It was a dangerous place.
The family’s social network broke down, and nobody wanted to see them anymore. Not even during festivals. Ruby got married in 2057 against her mother’s will. She inter-caste married, because she was afraid of being killed.
Often the Army came to their house, and it was very dangerous. three years of marriage Ruby's husband disappeared. Her husband was taken by the Army as a suspected Maoist.
One night the Army also came to look for Ruby’s one year old daughter, and she had to flee. Ruby has never gone home since. One time her husband’s younger sister, who only spoke Newari, got beaten up by the Army people. She told Ruby not to return home. It was too dangerous.
Ruby's husband disappeared one day 5pm on the road when he went to her and the daughter. Ruby does not know what happened to her husband.
